News stories - Centennial Project
Updated September 10, 2011
"Students test civility during uranium debate" by Bobby Magill, Fort Collins Coloradoan - January 22, 2011 (PDF 64 KB, 2 pages) In the lead up to the January 21 "Conversation Cafe" held at Colorado State University, Powertech officials Terry Walsh and Mike Beshore met with eighth-grade students and reportedly compared the potential environmental and public health risks from the Centennial in-situ leach uranium project to eating bananas. Bananas contain minute amounts of radioactive potassium-40. Every food has some small amount of radioactivity in it. In addition to bananas, other foods often mentioned as being slightly radioactive are carrots, potatoes, red meat, beans, and nuts. Walsh and Beshore deserve credit for informing the students that low levels of radionuclides are found naturally in food (and in air, water, soil, and the human body), but it's unclear what this has to do with the potential for an industrial mining operation to contaminate drinking water supplies and the environment with heavy metals, chemicals, and high levels of radium and uranium.
"C.A.R.D. appeals EPA permit for water testing at proposed Powertech uranium mine" by David O. Williams, The Colorado Independent - January 10, 2010 (PDF 54 KB, 2 pages) “Powertech and the EPA committed to adhering to the highest standard in protecting groundwater quality and this permit falls short,” said Ken Tarbett, who owns the closest property, including a drinking water well just west of the pump test site. “Not unlike Powertech’s decision to sue over groundwater protections at the state level, it appears this company is unwilling or incapable of living up to their repeated promises to do everything necessary to protect local water supplies.”
"Appeal halts uranium test well in Weld County" by Monte Whaley, Denver Post - January 7, 2011
"Shareholder reviewing investment in Powertech; Synatom might sell 19.6 percent share in company" by Bobby Magill, Fort Collins Coloradoan - September 29, 2010 (PDF 13 KB, 2 pages) CEO Clement tries to reassure investors and other supporters of the Centennial project: "It shouldn't change anything....We're talking to other people in terms of financing." The article also contains the misleading statement that Powertech may conduct future prospecting activities that are not subject to new state rules because prospecting notices were filed before the rules take effect. Powertech has completed all previously-approved drilling, and has not received final approval from the state for disposal of wastewater from a proposed aquifer pump test.
"Powertech updates plan; Centennial Project assessment now calls for 'aquifer enhancement'" by Bobby Magill - Fort Collins Coloradoan - August 31, 2010 (PDF 13 KB, 2 pages) Magill reports on Powertech CEO Dick Clement's brazen assertion that the Centennial Project is "one of the best undeveloped uranium deposits in the U.S.", in spite of the fact that 67% of the proposed mine units do not have sufficient hydraulic head to conduct in-situ leach mining. Powertech officials claim they can inject massive quantities of water into the ground to raise the level of the aquifer even though no mining company has ever attempted this.
"Colo. proposed rules on uranium mining go public " by Monte Whaley, Denver Post - February 1, 2010
"Nunn board against uranium mine" - Steven Olson, The Wellington (Wellington, Colorado) - September 9, 2009 Note: This article does a good job of describing the Nunn Town Board's discussion and vote against the Centennial Project at its September 3 meeting. However, it fails to mention the strong support and involvement of Nunn residents and nearby landowners who are not associated with CARD, the main grassroots organization opposing the project. The article concludes with a statement by Loveland attorney Jeff Parsons that while the resolution is not enough to stop Powertech, it would be a mitigating factor to agencies that determine whether the Canadian mining company gets the permits to operate.
"Powertech, CARD debate in Nunn" - Steven Olson, The Wellington - July 15, 2009 (PDF 17 KB, 3 pages) This article from 2009 accurately portrays the attitude of Powertech officials toward local landowners who express concerns about potential groundwater contamination. From the article: "...Mays (Chairman Wallace Mays) said, Powertech owns the land and the mineral rights and no one is going to tell it how to mine on its own land."
"State writing in-situ mining regulations" by JoAn Bjarko, The Wellington newspaper (Wellington, Colorado) - June 10, 2009 (PDF 217 KB) (HTML) Note: This article is about the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety's recently-started rulemaking process for House Bill 08-1161 and related legislation. For the first time, Powertech CEO Richard Clement says the company will not apply for mining permits for the Centennial Project until the rulemaking is completed. It is unlikely that the rulemaking process will be completed before the end of the year, and it could easily extend into 2010.
