HB-1161 passes out of ag committee on 11-2 vote

Amended groundwater protection bill moves on to appropriations committee

Posted February 21, 2008

In a landslide vote for proponents, an amended House Bill 1161 was approved by the Agriculture, Livestock, and Natural Resources Committee on Wednesday.  The bill was referred to the House Appropriations Committee for further action.  Approval by the Appropriations Committee will send the bill to the full House.

Eleven committee members voted yes -- only representatives Frank McNulty and Ray Rose voted no.  McNulty, from Highlands Ranch, argued in previous hearings that the bill needed more study.  At Wednesday's hearing, sponsor John Kefalas of Fort Collins explained that sufficient consideration had been given to input from the mining industry and other experts, and that action was needed now due to the planned submission of mining permit applications later this year by Powertech Uranium Corp.  An anticipated amendment from Representative McNulty which would have sent the bill to an interim study committee was not presented.
